听力原文： Telephone books in the United States have white, blue and yellow pages.
The white pages list people with phones by last name. The blue pages contain numbers of city services, government agencies, and public schools. Business and professional services are listed in a special section--the Yellow Pages.
To make a long distance call, you need an area code. Each area in the U. S. has an area code. The area covered by one area code may be small or large. For example, New York City has one area code, but so does the whole state of Oregon. If you want to know the area code of a place, you can look it up in the area code map, which is printed in the front of the white pages.
There are a lot of public telephones in the U. S. They have their own numbers. If you are making a long distance call on a public telephone and run out of money, give the number on your phone to the person you' re talking with. Then hang up the receiver and he can call you back. If you make a long distance call and get a wrong number, call the operator and explain what happened. This means that you can make the call again to the right number without having to pay more money.

听力原文： One winter evening Mr. Blake was driving in his car along an isolated country road. He had been to New York, in which he had withdrawn 10,000 dollars from the bank.
He was then going back home with the money, which he had put in his pocket. At the loneliest part of the road a middle-aged man in poor clothes stopped him and asked for a lift. Mr. Blake told him to get into the car and continued on his way. As he talked to the man he learned that he had been in prison for robbery and had escaped out of prison three days ago. Mr. Blake was very worried at the thought of the 10,000 dollars in his pocket.
Suddenly he saw a police-car and had a clever idea. He had just reached a small town where the speed limit was 40 miles an hour. He pressed down the accelerator and drove the car as fast as it would go. He looked back and saw the police-car had seen this and had begun to chase him. After a mile or so the police-car overtook him and ordered him to stop.

M: I' ve got a problem. I need your technical writing class, so I went early to the registration area, but by the time I got to the front of the line, it was closed. See, my advisor signed my course request and everything.
W: That' s a big class already. If it is closed, that means I have 50 students in it now.
M: I' m not surprised. It' s a really good class and many students want to attend it.
W: Can' t you take it next year？ We offer it every fall.
M: Well, that' s the problem. I' m supposed to be graduating this spring. But, of course, I can' t graduate without your class.
W: I see. In that case, I' ll sign for you. It looks like there will be 51. Take this form. back to the registration area. They will get you in.
