W: Would you mind coming right away, please？ It's the washing machine. It's making a funny noise. I want you to listen to it. I'm worried.
M: Oh, no. Not again. (In the kitchen now. )It's the pump, that's what it is.
W: I can't hear you. Let me turn the machine off!
M: The pump isn't working properly. So what do you want me to do about it？
W: What do I want you to do about it？ Repair it, of course. You don't think I made you leave your work for nothing, do you？
M: But I'm not a mechanic. Why don't you ring the shop where we bought the thing？ Ask them to repair it!
W: Are you sure that's what you want me to do？
M: Of course, I'm sure! Why do you ask？
W: Because the last time they came you got very angry.
M: Did I？
W: Yes. It was a small question of money. Don't you remember？ The men were only here for half an hour but they still charged two pounds for an hour's work. You didn't like that at all.
M: Oh？ Hmm...yes, I remember now.
Why is the woman worried about the washing machine？

W: I sure am. I've booked a flight for tomorrow afternoon and I can't wait.
M: That sounds great.
W: What about you？ Going home, too？
M: I haven't decided yet. I'm still debating...
W: Haven't decided？ Oh, you're never going to get a flight out of here. I'm sure all the seats have been reserved by now. It's the holiday season, after all.
M: Well, it's not such a big deal for me. My family only lives about a hundred and fifty miles from here. 1 usually drive or take the train. It's a short trip.
W: You don't sound very excited about it.
M: Well, we are not really a very close-knit family. I have three brothers, and they are spread out all over the place. One lives on the East Coast and the other on the West Coast. I even have a brother in Montreal!
W: Oh, vow! What does he do？
M: Translation work. It's kind of strange, but we rarely get together as a family anymore.
W: Well, I try to get home as much as possible. We're a big family — there are six of us children — so it is always a lot of fun.
M: Six kids？
W: Yep. And we're all really close. You should see it — most of us are married, too, so it makes for a very crowded house over the holidays.
M: I can imagine.
W: Of course, there are too many people to cook dinner for. It is a real headache for my parents. So we end up going out to dinner a lot. It is pretty crazy.
M: Well, at my house my mother loves to cook. So when all of us get home — which isn't that often — she always cooks big homemade meals. We have left-overs for days!
