听力原文: Now medical researchers say the wonderful feeling that comes with spring is not just in the artists' minds. The researchers say it is a real change in body chemistry that takes place as our bodies react to the longer days. They say we arc sensitive to the brightness, the color and the amount of light we see.
Too much sunlight, of course, can be dangerous. It can cause bums and skin cancer and can damage the eyes. But studies have shown that we need controlled amounts of sunlight or in- tense electric light all year long. In fact, light is being used effectively to treat emotional problems, skin diseases and even some kinds of cancer.
Many people overcome the effects of less sunlight in winter. They move toward sunlight as if it were a manager. They choose to work at a desk near a window. They like to sit in sunny rooms. They turn on as many electric lights as they can. They shop in brightly lighted stores and stay away from dark ones. Sometimes they travel to warm, sunny places in winter.

No investment offers a better return than giving the children the best start in life. Research has shown that for every US $1 spent -I would say invested -- on early childhood programs, countries enjoy cost savings of US $7. That is a pretty spectacular return. But it should not be surprising. It should be obvious.
Young children who receive good early care are less likely to die, get sick, fail in their school education or require remedial services. They will be able to support themselves and their families, push their societies forwards and help to break cycles of illness, deprivation and discrimination. Investing in early childhood plays a direct role in sustainable poverty reduction.
By young, I mean from before birth until the child is established in school at about the age of eight, but the first three years -- including the pre-birth period -- are particularly vital. This is when mental and physical capacities are forming and gaining strength.
UNICEF, the United Nations international Children's Emergency Fund, has long recognized the importance of these early years. More than half our program budget is devoted to early childhood. But last year, we went one step further. We made integrated early childhood development one of our five priorities (alongside girls' education, immunization (接种), HIV/AIDS and child protection).
Progress in one area contributes to progress in others. Tackling deficiencies in iron and iodine (碘) will improve not just physical health, but long-term brain development. The children of a healthy, educated, secure mother will thrive, rather than simply survive. Enhancing the role of fathers pays equal dividends (红利).
We need to focus most intensely on the under-threes, looking for ways to strengthen families' ability to care for their children, increasing their access to good quality, basic services, promoting gender equality and reinforcing national policies.
It also requires us to look at the health of women, because a young child's future is shaped by its mother's well-being before and during pregnancy.
Which is NOT the reason for the early childhood investment?
A. It plays an essential role in fighting against poverty constantly.
B. Countries will save later costs by seven times the amount once invested.
C. Young children who receive good early care will thrive physically and mentally.
D. Research has invested US $1 for each child and the countries have enjoyed the benefits.

听力原文: People tend to underestimate their life expectancy, and it's not surprising; It's the look- around problem again: You generalize from life spans of older friends and family members and figures that's what's in store for you, too. But in an era of rapidly improving life expectancy, the look-around method once again gives the wrong answer. Life expectancy at age 65 today is 15.6 additional years for women. For both sexes, this represents an increase of more than two years just since 1970. By the time the youngest baby boomers turn 65, the Social Security Administration projects that life expectancy at that age could be ashigh as 18 more years for men and 21 years for women. Note that everyone runs very nearly a 50 percent "risk" of living longer than their life expectancy.
That reality makes retirement planning exceptionally difficult. On the day a husband and wife turn 65, they may have only a year or two of living between them to finance, or they may have 70. A good way might be to plan against the possibility that you will outlive three quarters of the people in your age/9'oup -- a calculation our Web site calculator allows you to make. You may not want to deny a child a college education just so you are sure to have enough money to celebrate your 95th birthday, but you also don't want to become a burden on your children just because you unexpectedly live to be 10 years older than the average life expectancy for people of your age.
(30)
A. Because the children's college education fee is too high.
Because people may live longer than they expected.
C. Because you need to celebrate your 95th birthday.
D. Because you may become a burden on your children.
