The short definition, often found in a dictionary, is usually a synonym, a phrase, or a sentence. The short definition identifies the class to which a subject belongs and then gives the subject’s distinguishing characteristics. The advantage of the short definition is that it provides a precise meaning for a word. When writers wish to define an abstract, controversial, or complex concept, an extended definition is needed. The ex-tended definition may vary in length from a paragraph or two, to an entire essay or even a whole book. Alone or in combination with other kinds of writing, extended definition is a favorite strategy of expository writers.
