Traffic is also a problem. Roads carve up the forest, so their habitat is no longer a single area. This makes it hardfor young cassowaries to find their own territories. It takes a certain amount of 2 habitat to sustain a population.But the biggest threat is development. Large areas of forest in northern Queensland have been cut down, which has had a 3 effect on cassowary numbers. Locals are trying to slow or even stop the development. Some have begun replanting open fields. Others are encouraging more farmers to 4 and 5 clearing their land in the first place. They are also trying to create protected areas. The hope is to link forest sections so cassowaries don' t have to cross highways. Like koalas further south, cassowaries are under threat.
