Rhetoric implies the use or manipulation of words. And, indeed, a look at the etymology of the word rhetoric shows that the term is solidly rooted in the notion of "words" or "speech." The Greek words rhema ("a word') and rhetor ("a teacher of oratory"), which are akin, stem ultimately from the Greek verb eiro ("I A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF CLASSICAL RHETORIC 2I say"). Our English noun rhetoric derives from the Greek feminine adjective rhetorike, which is elliptical for rhetorike techne ("the art of the rhetor or orator"). English got its word immediately from the French rhetorique.
