The 'afternoon tea' or 'low tea' traditonally starts between 3 and 4 o'clock and was fashionable amongst the higher classes.
The middle and lower classes would have a more substantial 'high tea' later in the day, at 5 or 6 o'clock, but before dinner.
High tea and low tea derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea is served at the higher dinner table and afternoon tea is served at a lower table in the longe or drawing room.
