Directions:Read the following three passages carefully. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question.(本题共15小题,每题2分,共30分)Passage1Designed and constructed for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (the World’s Fair), the Eiffel Tower was meant to be a temporary structure, but it skirted demolition talks twice. The first time, at the beginning of the 1900s, the tower was kept around because of its transmission talents. Gustav Eiffel, the chief architect of the Eiffel Tower, had a variety of scientific experiments tested on the tower with the hope that any discoveries would help prolong its lifespan. One of these included a wireless transmissions test, which the tower passed with flying colors. During World War I, the Eiffel Tower’s transmission capabilities enabled it to intercept communications from enemies as well as relay intel to troops on the ground. The second time the Eiffel Tower was almost destroyed was during the German occupation of France during World War II. Hitler planned to get rid of the tower, but never ended up going through with his plan.Today, the Eiffel Tower is still used for communication transmissions but is chiefly regarded for its grandeur. If you can believe it, many Parisians initially found this architectural marvel to be nothing more than an eyesore. Regardless, the Eiffel Tower today stands as one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Visitors can walk up to the first floor of the Eiffel Tower ortake the elevator all the way up to the top, where they’ll be treated with vast panoramic views of the city. While some recent visitors complain of long lines –especially during the summer –you can bypass the wait by booking your tickets online at the Eiffel Tower’s website. And though some travelers aren’t crazy about the price to get to the top, many agree that the views are worth it. Visitors also strongly recommend making an additional trek at night. That’s because every hour on the hour, thousands of flickering light bulbs make the Eiffel Tower sparkle, leaving tourists in complete awe.1.For what purpose was the Eiffel Tower built?

    A. Sightseeing.
    B. An exposition.
    C. A meeting.
    D. An art show.

Passage2:A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job. The story begins with Walter Carr’s car breaking down the night before starting a new job at Bellhops, a furniture moving company. Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham – 32 kilometers away. He left at midnight so that he could make it to the customer’s house by 8:00 am the next morning. Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am. The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen. He told Lamey that he and his mother moved from New Orleans, Louisiana to Birmingham, Alabama after losing their home in Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was an extremely destructive and deadly hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast of the US in 2005. Jenny Lamey later wrote this on Facebook: “I just can’t tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is humble and kind and cheerful and he has big dreams! He is hardworking and tough. She then started a GoFundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr’s story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own 2014 Ford Escape. Walter Carr’s story touched many others around the United States. Within a few days, people gave over $73,000 to his GoFundMe page. Carr has decided to give a part of the donations to the Birmingham Education Foundation. And he has received more offers for jobs and scholarships for schools.6.Why did Walter Carr walk 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job?

    A. Because it was his first job.
    Because his car broke down.
    C. Because he is hardworking.
    D. Because other people needed his help.
