A recent paper in NEJM has documented three cases of patients who used unproven stem cell products and caused blindness. The three patients are all men, ranging in age from 72 to 88. They suffered from macular degeneration, a common, progressive disease of the retina that leads to loss of vision.

Second, that individuals donating embryos should do so freely, with voluntary & informed consent.
ISSCR does not support any forms of stem cell research, performed under rigorous and transparent oversight, and advocates that embryonic, adult, and reprogrammed stem cell research must move forward in parallel to best understand disease & identify treatment.
