听力原文: A Continental Pacific Railroad goods train derailed on Tuesday about 40 miles north of Sacramento. The exact cause is still being investigated, but authorities say it was no accident. The head engineer said everything was fine; then suddenly, everything wasn't.
Of the goods train's 86 cars, 22 went off the tracks. Fortunately, this incident did not involve any deaths, human or otherwise. (29)The head engineer was treated for a broken wrist at a nearby hospital. He was the only injured.
Trains throughout California frequently carry dangerous goods, such as chemicals. When these trains derail, authorities immediately evacuate nearby communities because of the danger of explosions or of harmful fumes. (30) However, this train carried only lumber, new automobiles, and cattle destined for slaughter.
After the derailment, lumber was scattered on either side of the tracks. About 20 automobiles were damaged. The biggest problem, however, was the cattle. About 300 of them were standing on or near the tracks, wandering into the nearby woods, or standing on the nearby highway. Traffic on the two-lane highway was backed up for almost a mile in each direction.
A California Highway Patrol spokesman said that they knew who was responsible for this. (31)The train was damaged by a group called Tofu for You. They left their pamphlets all over the crime scene. They "liberate" animals that are on their way to the slaughterhouse. They think Americans should eat tofu instead of meat, but their effort was in vain. All these cows were killed and became burgers three days later.
(30)

A. 86 were injured, 22 dead.
B. 22 were injured, 86 dead.
C. No one was injured or dead.
D. Only the head engineer was injured.

听力原文: China's economy is the world's fastest growing one and it shows no sign of slowing down. Signing contracts with Chinese businesses is the top priority for every British company that wants to stay ahead in global trade. Now schools in the United Kingdom want to give their students a head start by teaching them Mandarin -- and they are making it compulsory.
Brighton College is a private school on the south coast of Britain and (26) already teaches Latin, Spanish and French to its 1,200 pupils. At present, students can choose between these languages, but from the autumn, which is the beginning of the new academic year in British schools, every student must study Mandarin whether they like it or not.
Richard Calms, headmaster of Brighton College, describes the move as" all the more radical" as there is very few native Chinese pupils studying at the College. (27) Mr. Cairns is considered a radical person himself because he will begin Mandarin classes in September as a pupil in an ordinary class of students.
(28) Calms is convinced that teaching Mandarin is essential for his students that already have a good record in succeeding in business. With Mandarin added to a pupil's portfolio, that record can be sustained and improved. "One of my key tasks is to make sure pupils are equipped for the realities of the 21st century and one is that China has the fastest growing economy." he said.
Brighton College is following a national trend as studying Chinese to the British A-level standard is destined to overtake Spanish and German, according to recent figures showing the number of students taking language examinations.
(27)

A. Latin, Spanish, French and Mandarin.
B. Latin, French, German and Spanish.
C. French, Spanish., German and Mandarin.
D. English, Spanish, German and Mandarin.
