听力原文: By the end of the 1980s, U2 had established itself not only as one of the world's most popular bands but also as one of the most innovative. The members are Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. The band members were attending a Dublin secondary school when they began rehearsing in spite of their lack of technical expertise. The band's early records were characterized by an intense spirituality, and they commented on social and political issues, with compassion and tenderness.
The group became renowned for its inspirational live performances before it made much of an impact on the pop charts. But with the multimillion-selling success of The Joshua Tree album and the number one hits With or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, U2 became pop stars.
On Rattle and Hum, the bend explored American roots music—blues, country, and folk—with typical earnestness, but were ridiculed by some critics who found the project shallow.
U2 reinvented itself for the new decade, reemerging in 1991 with the album Achtung Baby and a sound heavily influenced by European experimental, electronic, and disco music. However, despite the flashy exterior, the band's lyrics remained obsessed with matters of the soul. In 2000, U2 released the aptly entitled (All That You Can't Leave Behind), which combined the elements of the band's earlier music.

There is a great deal of controversy within the medical profession regarding the use and value of the coronary bypass procedure, and for more than eight years the American Heart Association has discussed the question at its regular scientific sessions. The bypass operation consists of open heart surgery in which the physician takes a vein from the patient's leg and implants it near the heart to construct a passage around the blockage in a clogged artery so that blood can flow freely by. The operation is performed on about 100,000 persons a year in the U.S. and costs approximately $10,000. The procedure is designed to relieve the pain of angina pectoris (心绞痛) which occurs when the blood supply is obstructed and also to allow the patient more freedom of sustained activity.
In persons with advanced heart disease and blockage in several arteries, the bypass operation is considered by most doctors to be the preferable means of prolonging life. In the case of those with a less advanced disease, or where only one artery is involved, the advisability of the procedure is much more controversial. The operation doesn't cure the disease that caused the blocked artery in the first place. According to some studies, somewhere around half of the patients who have had the bypass to relieve one artery will have another blocked artery within five years, and in some cases even within one year.
There is of course a mortality rate in any major operation which varies from physician to physician and hospital to hospital. The danger to the patient is greatly increased if he is in generally poor condition, very advanced in age, or suffering from some serious or debilitating(衰弱,衰竭)illness. It is essential that the operation be performed by a skilled surgeon knowledgeable about this particular technique and in a hospital with the best possible facilities for his use.
What is a coronary bypass?

An operation to bypass the heart.
B. An operation to replace a disabled artery with another artery.
C. An operation to construct a passage around a blocked artery.
D. An operation to take care of faulty heart action.
