Lucky you have a job in demolition. It's slow and dirty work, but steady. The fading structures of a decaying city are the great mineral mines and hardware shops of the nation. Break them down and reuse the parts. Coal is too difficult to dig up and transport to give us energy in the amounts we need, nuclear fission is judged to be too dangerous, the hoped-for breakthrough toward nuclear fusion never took place, and solar batteries are too expensive to maintain in sufficient quantity.
Anyone older than ten can remember automobiles. At first, the price of gasoline climbed—way up. Finally, only the well-to-do drove, and that was too clear an indication that they were filthy rich; so any automobile on a city street was overturned and burned. The cars vanished, becoming part of the metal resource.
There are advantages in 1997, if you want to look for them. The air is cleaner, and there seem to be fewer cold. The crime rate has dropped. With the police car too expensive, policemen are back on their beats. More important, the streets are full. Legs are king, and people walk everywhere far into the night. There is mutual protection in crowds.
If the weather isn't too cold, people sit out front. If it is hot, the open air is the only air conditioning they get. At least the street lights still burn. Indoors, few people can afford to keep light burning after supper.
As for the winter—well, it is inconvenient to be cold, with most of what furnace fuel is allowed hoarded for the dawn. But sweaters are popular indoor wear. Showers are not an everyday luxury. Lukewarm sponge baths must do, and if the air is not always very fragrant in the human vicinity, the automobile fumes are gone.
It is worse in the suburbs, which were born with the auto, lived with the auto, and are dying with the auto. Suburbanites form. associations that assign turns to the procurement and distribution of food. Pushcarts creak from house to house along the posh suburban roads, and every bad snowstorm is a disaster. It isn't easy to hoard enough food to last till the roads are open. There is not much refrigeration except for the snow-banks, and then the dogs must be fought off.
What energy is left must be conserved for agriculture. The great car factories make trucks and farm machinery almost exclusively. The American population isn't going up much anymore, but the food supply must be kept high even though the prices and difficulty of distribution force each American to eat less. Food is needed for export to pay for some trickles of oil and for other resources.
The rest of the world is not as lucky as we are. They're starving out there because earth's population has continued to rise. The population on earth is 5.5 billion—up by 1.5 billion since 1977—and, outside the United States and Europe, not more than one in five has enough to eat at any given time. There is a high infant mortality rate.
It's more than just starvation, though. There are those who manage to survive on barely enough to keep the body working, and that proves to be not enough for the brain. It is estimated that nearly two billion people in the world are permanently brain-damaged by undernutrition, and the number is growing.
At least the big armies are gone. Only the United States and the Soviet Union can maintain a few tanks, planes, and ships—which they dare not move for fear of biting into limited fuel reserves.
Machines must be replaced by human muscle and beasts of burden. People are working longer hours, and—with lighting restricted, television only three hours a night, new books few and printed in small editions—what is there to do with leisure? Work, sleep, and eating are the great trinity

听力原文: In the early part of the 19th century there were no schools in the southern states of America admitting black children to its free public schools. Some brave teachers ran secret night schools. Teachers who were found educating black children would be forced to leave town. The situation was better in the North and in 1787 the first African Free School was opened in New York City. This school and six others in the city began receiving public funding in 1824.
When Prudence Crandall opened a school for black girls, attempts were made by local white people to burn the building down. Despite attempts to prevent the school from receiving essential supplies, Crandall school continued and began to attract girls from Boston and Philadelphia. The local authorities then began using a vagrancy law against these students. These girls could now be given ten lashes of the whip for attending the school.
In 1834 a law was passed making it illegal to provide a free education for black students. When Prudence Crandall refused to obey the law she was arrested and imprisoned. Meanwhile, a white mob attacked the school and threatened the lives of Crandall and her students. Afraid that the children would be killed or badly injured, Crandall decided to close her school down.
In 1849 there was a lawsuit against the city of Boston for refusing to admit black children to its schools. The case was lost but in 1855 Massachusetts legislature changed its policy and declared that "no person shall be excluded from a Public School on account of race, colour or prejudice."

New York City is the destination for many immigrants. Students in cities like New York are used to hearing wide variations of English. In a town where immigrant communities flourish, many dialects and languages mix with standard English. Within the New York City public school system, a number of programs have been established to address this situation. One such innovative program is the International High School in Queens. Its mission is to help new immigrant students develop not only academic skills, but also the cultural skills that are necessary for success in high school, college, and beyond. Only students who have been in the United States for less than four years are eligible for admission.
The philosophy of this school is that you learn by doing, and not by hearing the teacher lecture. In some of the classes such as math class, six teams of young people are gathered around lab tables, building their own miniature temple out of cardboard. They're speaking Spanish, English, and Mandarin Chinese. This is not just a bilingual classroom, it's a multilingual one. Although they come from all over the world, the students at the International High School understand each other very well. Probably what they share most is the feeling of not fitting in, a feeling of estrangement.
In other classes, students who know more English and more math will help teach those who know less. Whenever they have problems with pronunciation, they correct each other instead of making fun of the errors.
New York City can be an intimidating place, even for those who have spent their whole lives here. But for young people who have just been uprooted from tight-knit, extended families and traditional communities abroad, the city can seem positively unfriendly. In the past, immigrants to the U. S. often feel the need to assimilate as quickly as possible into mainstream American culture. The fact that immigrant youngsters speak a language other than English is seen by most educators as a problem that needs to be corrected. The usual approach is to teach students exclusively in English, and to suppress the use of their native language.
However, according to teachers in the school, young immigrants don't just need a place to learn English and other subjects, they need, above all else, a place that feels completely safe and welcoming. It's particularly important for these students to have a comfort level in a place called school and for that school to feel like home, to feel like their needs are going to get met, urn, they're going to be listened to, they're going to be valued for who they are and the diverse backgrounds that they come from, and that those things are viewed as what makes them special rather than what makes them a problem.
Language is more than just the way that you communicate with the world; it's the way that you interpret the world in your own head. There's something more than just communication that's lost when you lose your native language.
