听力原文: In the 19th century it was common to hear people in Europe and America say that the resources of the sea were unlimited. For example, a noted biologist writing in the mid 1800s commented that all of the great sea-fish industries are inexhaustible. Today there's evidence that the resources of the sea are as seriously threatened as those of the land and the air, and the concern of conservationists now includes sea-fish as well as the African elephant, the Indian tiger and the American eagle. Further, the threat to fish is more alarming in some ways than the threat to birds and land animals because fish are a much needed food resource. Many people throughout the world depend on fish as an important part of their diets, and a decline in the fish supply could have extensive effects on hunger and population.

听力原文: When quite young, Daniel Webster did not always obey the rules at school. One day the teacher caught him breaking a ruler and asked him to come forward to be punished. In that school, striking the open hand with a ruler was the punishment. Daniel's hands happened to be very dirty. On the way to the teacher's desk he wiped the palm of one hand on his pantaloons.
"Give me your hand, sir," demanded the teacher. Out went the right hand.
The teacher looked at it a moment and said, "Daniel, if you will find another hand in this schoolroom as dirty as that, I will let you go. " Instantly from behind Daniel's back came the left hand. "Here it is, sir," he replied.
"That will do," said the teacher, laughing. "You may go."

听力原文: An "early bird" used to be a person who was awake early and began his(or her) day's work before other people. The people, who said it, were thinking of an old saying: It is the early bird that catches the worm. But since 1965 the Early Bird has had a different meaning. The modem Early Bird is a communications satellite in orbit round the earth.
The use of wires to carry telephone communications and for other purposes of the same kind does not satisfy modem needs. We had to use radio. But the radio waves that we use for these purposes--microwaves--travel in straight lines. They do not follow the curve of the earth's surface. We can send them from one radio station to another—a relay station--where we amplify them and send them do a third station. If there is no relay station within about 50 kilometers to receive the microwaves, they will continue into space. At a certain height, some of them are sent back to earth. A powerful station several hundred kilometers from their starting point can receive them. But these are not good ways of sending the thousands of telephone, radio and television signals across the oceans.
