美国的传统节日，有不少是我这个东方人从未经历过，甚至闻所未闻的。刚到美国，我去一所成人学校读英语。一脚跨进教室，就见一位碧眼女郎飞步迎来，献上一张心形卡片，上面赫然写着：“我喜欢你!”我不禁愕然。纵然“一见钟情”，也没有如此神速的!岂料又有一位金发少女接踵而至，也递上一张心形卡片，上面也写着：“我喜欢你!”真是艳福非浅。来者不拒呢？还是谢绝为妙？正在考虑时，幸得救星到了。我的英语教师，来自台湾的陈女士翩翩而至，朗声笑道：“收下吧，不管谁送你，你都收下。今天是情人节，美国人在这一天互赠心形卡片以示友谊。”啊，我如释重负地笑了。

那还是几年前的一个早晨，在太阳刚刚升起来的时候，踏着熹微的晨光，到一个离旅馆不远的菜市场去。到了邻近菜市场的地方，市场的气氛就逐渐浓了起来。熙熙攘攘的人群，摩肩擦背，来来往往。许多老大娘的菜篮子里装满了蔬菜海味鸡鸭鱼肉。有的篮子里活鱼在摇摆着尾巴，肥鸡在咯咯地叫着。老大娘带着一脸笑意，满怀愉快，走回家去。

姚明今天已是一名优秀的球星，可当初他的追求目标却不是拿冠军、去NBA、当球星。他那玩命的训练，奋勇的拼搏，只是为了有一双合脚的鞋子，让全家人不再为他穿鞋而发愁。也许姚明如此简单的目标让人感到不可思议，但正是这看似简单的目标成就了他今天的辉煌。他认真实际地确定着自己人生每一阶段的追求目标。并不断地去实现它，超越它。回首人生旅途中那许许多多被人们抛弃的未竞事业和目标，我们再一次反思姚明：要想走路，先得拥有一双合脚的鞋子，还得一步步地走。

The beauty of our country is as hard to define as it is easy to enjoy. Remembering other and larger countries we see at once that one of its charms is that it is immensely varied within a small compass. We have here no vast mountain ranges, no illimitable plains. But we have superb variety. A great deal of everything is packed into little space. I suspect that we are always, faintly conscious of the fact that this is a smallish island, with the sea always round the corner. We know that everything has to be neatly packed into a small space. Nature, we feel, has carefully adjusted things like mountains, plains, rivers, lakes—to the scale of the island itself. A mountain 12,000 feet high would be a horrible monster here, as wrong as a plain 400 miles long, a river as broad as the Mississippi. Though the geographical features of this island are comparatively small, and there is astonishing variety almost everywhere, that does not mean that our mountains are not mountains, our plains not plains.

How quickly all things disappear, in the universe the bodies themselves, but in time the remembrance of them; what is the nature of all sensible things, and particularly those which attract with the bait of pleasure or terrify by pain, or are noised abroad by vapory fame; how worthless, and contemptible, and sordid, and perishable, and dead they are—all this it is the part of the intellectual faculty to observe. To observe too who these are whose opinions and voices give reputation; what death is, and the fact that, if a man looks at it in itself, and by the abstractive power of reflection resolves into their parts all the things which present themselves to the imagination in it, he will then consider it to be nothing else than an operation of nature; and if any one is afraid of an operation of nature, he is a child. This, however, is not only an operation of nature, but it is also a thing which conduces to the purposes of nature. To observe too how man comes near to the Deity, and by what part of him, and when this part of man is so disposed.
